Kanat Baigarin was elected as a Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev on June 4. This appointment followed the election of a new board of directors of the University, which took place on May 30 this year.

Kanat Baigarin replaced Hajiyev Fuad Aslanogly. The new chairman of the Board of Directors will oversee the issues of scientific development and educational programs of the university in the field of energy, broadcasting scientific and innovative experience of Nazarbayev University, the press service of the university reports.

Kanat Baigarin is a graduate of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), holds a degree in physics engineering and a PhD in plasma physics and chemistry from the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. He is the author of more than 60 scientific publications.

Since 2018, he has held the position of Advisor to the President of Nazarbayev University. From 2014 to 2018, he was Vice President for Innovation and Science at Nazarbayev University. From 2011 to 2014, he was the General Director of the Scientific and Innovative System of Nazarbayev University (NURIS), was the General director of the Center for Energy Research of Nazarbayev University.

Kanat Baigarin worked in the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has extensive international consulting experience, including working with the World Bank, in UN projects on climate change and renewable energy.

It is expected that the new board of directors, together with the new rector of the university, G. Nygymetov, will carry out important reforms to transform the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications into the leading technical university of Kazakhstan and the flagship of energy education in Central Asia.

As part of the development of a new university strategy, it is also planned to open a new campus with new educational programs, form an innovative ecosystem and infrastructure of the university.
